FITS Experience™
School should be about more than completing assignments and moving from one lesson to the next.
Students should have opportunities to discover interests, build friendships, try something new, celebrate accomplishments, move, create, laugh, participate, and feel like they are part of a school community.
That is the purpose of FITS Experience™.
FITS Experience brings together the parts of school that help students with autism experience something larger than academics: electives, clubs, art, music, movement, recreation, field experiences, school events, social opportunities, celebrations, friendships, and belonging.
A Real School Experience
Families choosing a specialized school should not have to choose between support and a meaningful school experience.
Students with autism deserve individualized education and integrated support—but they also deserve school activities, friends, clubs, performances, electives, field trips, celebrations, recreation, school traditions, opportunities to participate, and memories they can look back on.
A-FITS was never intended to feel like a clinic where academics happen. It is a school.
Discovering Interests
Students often connect more naturally when an activity already means something to them.
One student may love art. Another may be interested in technology. Another may enjoy sports. Someone else may love music, gardening, building, gaming, cooking, theatre, science, or something completely unexpected.
Sometimes an interest becomes a hobby. Sometimes it becomes a friendship. Sometimes it becomes something a student may eventually want to pursue as an adult.
Electives & Specials
Electives and specials give students opportunities to participate in activities beyond their core program.
Depending on the campus, school year, staffing, and student interests, experiences may include art, music, adaptive physical education, technology, computer activities, yoga or movement, STEM, creative projects, recreation, and other enrichment opportunities.
Sometimes the most important outcome is simple: the student finds something they genuinely enjoy.
Creativity Matters
Not every strength appears on an academic assessment.
Some students express themselves through art, music, movement, building, technology, performance, or design.
Creativity gives students another way to communicate who they are and another place for confidence to grow.
Play & Recreation
Play is not wasted time.
Through playground activities, games, sports, movement, and recreation, students may practice turn-taking, cooperation, flexibility, communication, motor skills, problem-solving, sportsmanship, waiting, joining a group, managing winning and losing, making choices, and friendship.
Students deserve time to be students.
Socialization Through Experience
Social development does not need to begin with “Today we are going to practice social skills.”
Sometimes the strongest social opportunities begin with: “Want to play?” “Can I sit here?” “Do you like Pokémon too?” “Can you help me build this?”
FITS Experience creates situations where interaction has a natural purpose.
School Events & Traditions
School traditions help create community.
Throughout A-FITS's history, students have participated in school dances, Prom, performances, talent activities, holiday events, Trunk-or-Treat, special celebrations, bake sales, student-store activities, social events, schoolwide gatherings, and other student-centered traditions.
The bigger purpose is giving students opportunities to participate in a community where they can say: “This is my school too.”
Learning Through Experience
Not every important lesson happens at a desk.
Activities, projects, recreation, clubs, field experiences, performances, group challenges, and community participation give students opportunities to learn through active involvement.
These experiences can strengthen communication, problem-solving, flexibility, teamwork, critical thinking, self-management, independence, and the ability to apply previously learned skills in a new setting.
The experience may be enjoyable in the moment, but it can also become a place where learning becomes real.
Field Experiences & Community Participation
Some of the most memorable learning happens outside the classroom.
Field experiences can give students opportunities to experience new environments, practice community behavior, use communication skills, build flexibility, explore interests, practice independence, navigate unfamiliar settings, spend time with peers, and apply skills outside school.
FITS Experience connects naturally with FITS Life™ and FITS Beyond™ because experiences outside the classroom help students practice skills in the larger world.
Clubs & Shared Interests
After-school clubs are another important part of the A-FITS experience.
Students can choose clubs around interests they actually enjoy and meet peers who enjoy those same things—LEGO, Pokémon, video games, STEM, art, theatre, dance, gardening, yearbook, sports, and other student-interest clubs.
Clubs are centered on socialization, shared interests, friendship, and fun.
Celebrating Student Success
Success should be recognized, and success does not always look the same.
For one student, success may be earning an academic achievement. For another, it may be performing in front of a group, joining a club, trying something new, participating in a dance, making a friend, completing a project, speaking up for themselves, or helping another student.
Celebration helps build confidence. And confidence can influence what a student is willing to try next.
Belonging Is Part of Education
A student can receive excellent instruction and still feel disconnected from school.
We want students to feel known, included, accepted, supported, and part of something.
Belonging should not require every student to participate the same way. There should be more than one way to be part of the community.
More Than a Student
Every student is more than their diagnosis, academic level, behavior, or areas where they need support.
They have interests, personalities, humor, talents, preferences, goals, things they love, things they are curious about, and things they have not discovered yet.
FITS Experience gives students more opportunities to discover and express those parts of themselves.
Families & Community Are Part of the Learning
Families are not simply invited to observe the school experience. They are important partners in understanding the student, identifying meaningful goals, recognizing progress, and helping skills carry into life outside school.
Many A-FITS experiences are also designed to bring families into the school community. Depending on the campus and school year, families may be invited to participate in school dances, spirit days, Fall Festival, Thanksgiving celebrations, park days, performances, seasonal activities, and other special events.
Community experiences give students additional opportunities to practice communication, flexibility, independence, social participation, and real-world skills beyond the classroom.
Specific activities change from year to year, but the purpose remains consistent: create connection, celebrate students, strengthen the school-family partnership, and help learning extend into the larger world.
